He needs to raise his net worth.
Pop music superstar Justin Bieber has officially launched his own Twitch channel, complete with a promise to “stream every day,” instantly shaking up the platform with his first broadcast on October 22. It’s a huge moment for the world of streaming, since it’s not every day that a huge celebrity commits to one of the biggest interactive social media platforms out there.
His first hour-long stream pulled in over 397,000 views, and he’s already picked up over 50,000 followers since the channel was announced, according to Daily Dot. This is all happening incredibly fast, and it looks like a whole new wave of celebrity streaming is about to crash over Twitch.
On his very first stream, the popstar didn’t sit down for a cozy chat or an epic gaming session; instead, he played some chill sports like basketball, ping pong, and pool. Now, this is the part that makes the whole thing feel really new and kind of bizarre. He filmed himself walking around his warehouse, giving a brief tour of the massive space. On the other hand, he apparently ignored the chat for minutes at a time, which is a big no-no in the streaming world, but hey, it was his first time.
Bieber is now on Twitch
Maybe he’s still getting used to the whole “interactive audience” thing. The platform is absolutely shaken by the news. One viewer was concerned, suggesting, “hope he’s okay and hope this isn’t because he needs the attention, he has the talent.” Which is a fair point.
This move by Bieber is huge. It takes the celebrity-on-Twitch trend that’s been building with people like T-Pain and Drake and adds another layer to it. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine other huge names following suit. I love seeing T-Pain because he’s always so open about so much. Maybe we’ll see Bieber open up about his marriage and more.
So, for those of you who’ve been on the fence about joining Twitch, or if you’re a long-time viewer, you can expect the dynamics of the platform to change. The line between traditional celebrity and “content creator” is getting blurrier by the day, and Justin Bieber just took a massive step over it. Either way, make sure to hurry and follow his channel before the follower count gets completely out of control.
