The New York Yankees acquired utility infielder Max Scheumann from the Athletics in exchange for minor league right-hander Luis Burgos.
With the move, the Yankees have added even more MLB-level talent to their roster as they prepare to reclaim their spot atop the AL East.

Who is Max Scheumann?
The A’s dropped Scheumann onto waivers Friday after claiming infielder Andy Ibañez from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Scheumann had played the last two seasons for the A’s after making his debut in 2024.
The 28-year-old played every infield position except for first base in 2025, and also featured at every position in the outfield. The A’s largely used him as a defensive replacement and pinch runner, but he still managed 213 plate appearances in 101 games played.
Scheumann slashed .197/.295/.273 in 2025 with two home runs and 13 RBIs. He had a great glove no matter where the A’s placed him, posting a fielding run value of six and eight outs above average — ranking him in the top 5% of MLB.
Who is Luis Borgos?
The Yankees signed Borgos as an international free agent in 2024, and he has spent the last two seasons pitching in the Dominican Summer League.
He made his debut in 2024, where he made 14 appearances and had a 5.14 ERA through 28 innings pitched.
In 2025, he made 11 appearances and had a 2.44 ERA through 51.2 innings. The 20-year-old struck out 48 batters in that timeframe, and earned a spot on the DSL’s AL All-Star team.
What Does This Trade Mean for the Yankees?
Scheumann’s presence on the Yankees’ roster doesn’t give them an immediate upgrade in any area, but it does offer some defensive reinforcement in the middle infield.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ryan McMahon can hold their own at second and third base respectively, but with the struggles the Yankees had defensively at shortstop last season, Scheumann could be seeing plenty of time.
Anthony Volpe will miss the start of the season, so a starting spot isn’t out of the question if Scheumann can perform during spring training. He does have competition to beat out if that’s the case, though, as the Yankees also have Oswaldo Cabrera, Jose Caballero and Amed Rosario on their depth chart.
