The coach speaks ahead of the game against Elche CF
After last week’s victory in Oviedo, RCD Espanyol now have a home game against Elche CF this Saturday. Coach Manolo González is clear that his team will fight to extend a winning run, on what will be a special series of days for the club due to it being their 125th anniversary.
“We will compete for three points that must be earned. We don’t want to let ourselves down. We missed out on victory against Valencia and also against Real Betis, and we want to be a dependable team at home again,” he said in his pre-match press conference.
“The players look to be very focused. It’s a league match against very tough opposition. We identify with everything the anniversary represents for the club, but we will keep that separate from the actual football aspect,” he commented.
“Elche are a side that opponents struggles to create chances against. They are a team that stand out because they are very complete and have many different gears to their play. They’re where they are in the table on their own merits.”
He stated that this Saturday’s match “is very different from what we saw in Oviedo a week ago. The fans have always been by our side, they’ve pushed us, they’ve helped us out, and they’ve become indispensable to us.”
Finally, when asked about his best moments as RCD Espanyol coach so far, he noted that “both the promotion and staying in LaLiga may seem like small goals, but for us they’re big ones, and necessary for the team to continue growing in the Primera División. Regarding the club’s history, there have been very significant moments, from the founding, through to the trophies we’ve won, and the two UEFA Cup finals.”
