Liverpool vs. Newcastle : The matchup
The defending Premier League champs sit just two points back of Manchester United for the top-4 cutoff for Champions League qualifying with their 10-6-7 record and 36 points through 23 matches. And while Liverpool has won its two Champions League matches by a 10-0 margin in January, Premier League wins have proven elusive. The team is 0-4-1 in league matches in January with that lone loss coming last time out in a 3-2 outcome against AFC Bournemouth. Liverpool faced a 2-0 deficit in that one, tied the match on a Dominik Szoboszlai goal in the 80th minute, but gave up the game-winner on a score by Amine Adli in the fifth minute of extra time.
Newcastle United is three points behind Liverpool in the league standings with a 9-6-8 record and 33 points and has the same scoring differential (plus-3). While the team has just one win over its past five contests, a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain last time out in Champions League has a chance to be a building block toward a better run of Premier League results. Newcastle gave up PSG’s lone goal in the eighth minute and weathered a storm of 25 shots to equalize late in the first half and hold PSG scoreless over the final 82-plus minutes to secure a draw.
