The Worcester School Committee voted to make Deputy Superintendent Brian Allen the next superintendent of Worcester Public Schools during its meeting Thursday night.

The committee’s move to make Allen the replacement for current Superintendent Rachel Monárrez means that Massachusetts’ second-largest school district will not undergo a protracted superintendent selection process or need an interim superintendent.

The vote to name Allen the next superintendent passed 8-to-1, with only At-Large School Committee Member Maureen Binienda voting against the measure.

“I really believe this vote is about the wellness of the district,” Worcester Mayor and School Committee Chair Joseph Petty said during the meeting. “ … If we really believe in the work the superintendent has done, we need someone who has been involved in shaping the school district for the past three years.”

Allen is set to take over the position of superintendent on July 1 — the date on which Monárrez has said she will vacate it. He will need to negotiate a contract with the school committee before that time.

Monárrez announced her resignation on April 17 after serving three years as Worcester superintendent. She has since been named the incoming superintendent for Orange Unified School District, which is located in Southern California.

Allen is a South High grad who’s worked for Worcester Public Schools since 1996, according to the Telegram and Gazette. He previously worked in various roles throughout the district, including as a business manager and as its chief financial officer.

“He knows this district inside and out. He is committed. He is a steady leader, and he has deep institutional knowledge,” Petty said of Allen during the meeting. “His expertise with public education and municipal budgeting – nobody is better than him. In uncertain times, who would be better than him in what could be some very tough times going forward?”
