The series is flashy, visually stunning and has a melodramatic flair that has an aspirational, desirable and envious quality to it. And yet, it’s not all about style, hourglass physiques and washboard abs and no substance. If you scratch the surface, you’ll find a story of a family where everything that glitters isn’t gold and where ambitions to break free from norms still thrive. But all of that doesn’t dim Sophia’s struggles either. Here’s an enterprising woman who lost her parents and is trying to make a name for herself in a world that doesn’t believe in women.

But this handsomely-produced royals-navigating-the-pulls-and-pushes-of-modernity struggles for air under all that elaborate costumery, with characters sitting around in heavy jewellery even when they are at breakfast. You wish their emotions broke through a little more, along with their perfect hair-and-makeup, which could have pushed past the staginess: their nick-names

At eight episodes of nearly 40 minutes each, it’s a long, often inconsistent ride that might become a tedious watch. But if you’re in the mood for a breezy, brain-off binge that would take you back to Mills and Boons days — the kind of romance you’d watch wrapped in a blanket with a tub of ice cream — ‘The Royals’ might just do the trick. Especially if you still swoon over polo-playing princes (or just Ishaan Khatter) in linen or better still, shirtless.

If you love rom-coms, Netflix’s The Royals is a tailor-made show for you. It has the right amounts of romances, comedy and drama, making it a modern-day fairy tale worth binge-watching. However, it does stumble in giving all it’s characters enough screen time.

What’s far more enticing is the look of luxury. The Royals and its resplendent wardrobe make a case for keeping up appearances far more effectively than all its topsy-turvy inhabitants over eight lame episodes of soapy royal drama.

The Royals has its flaws, but the series is interesting. The Netflix series will keep you hooked and each episode ends on a high that will make you intrigued. The royal lifestyle is captured well in the series and each character has their USPs. The music in the series is fine and the song Tu Hai Wahi is too good. When the makers said that The Royals is the Indian version of Bridgerton, they weren’t entirely wrong. Obviously, it is not that grand but has its own moments. Overall, being a fun watch, The Royals deserves 2.5 out of 5 stars.

What I feel The Royals lacks is a solid script, though the idea of the show is refreshing and the look of the show is to die for. Watch the show for the classy look of the royals and I am sure you are going to find it delightful if you are in an undemanding mood.

Despite the packed episodes, The Royals is set to be your next guilty pleasure. Balancing modern with traditional, the series sets out to tell a story of a royal family that has to change with the times. The Hindi series has a little bit of everything, which is both a good and bad thing. Like most Indian web series these days, it ends with a cliffhanger that can only be answered in a second season.
