Theater-goers won’t be able to see Broadway‘s Stranger Things: The First Shadow this week – producers have canceled public performances of the prequel drama from tonight to Saturday so they can film the performances with the original cast for future release.
No timeline or other details about the film release have been disclosed. The Broadway producers are Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions.
Public performances resume Sunday, February 15. Deadline confirmed this week’s filming.
Producers wanted to get the original cast members – including Tony nominee Louis McCartney who plays the young Henry Creel – before they depart the production March 29.
A new cast, including Victor de Paula Rocha as Henry, has been announced as replacements, including Ayana Cymone as Patty Newby, Shea Grant as Joyce Maldonado, Juan Carlos as Bob Newby and Matthew Erick White as James Hopper, Jr.
Directed Stephen Daldry (co-directed by Justin Martin), Stranger Things: The First Shadow opened at the Marquis Theatre on April 22, 2025, following its 2023 London debut with McCartney making move. Written by Kate Trefrey, the Broadway production has enjoyed a resurgence in box office as the Netflix series came to an end this season. For the week ending February 8, the play was the fifth top-grossing production on Broadway with a take of $1,400,514.
