Sophia Galaté steps confidently into her own with debut album, For My Own Entertainment, a textured 12-track exploration of independence,(soulful R&B and funk colours) that feels both personal and playful. The early singles “Please Don’t Talk To Me” and “Options” set the tone, the former a clear statement of self-care and the latter a sultry invitation with guarded edges. The third single, “My Girls”, becomes a celebration of female friendship and shared nights out. On the production side she draws on a team including producer Akeel Henry (credited on the title-track) and for “My Girls” producers ErZ, Mirelle Cabangbang & Matt Hennessy. The instrumentation is rich yet uncluttered, allowing her jazz-inflected vocals and lyrical candour to shine through. While the album’s playful, carefree moments stand out, there’s also a consistent undercurrent of vulnerability, the closing track “No Saving (Reprise)” reflects a longing for growth within love rather than escape. In sum, Galaté delivers a debut that is as entertaining as it is introspective — an album created for her own entertainment (and ours), and a promising showing of someone comfortable in her skin. If anything, one hopes that in future she’ll take even more sonic risks, but as a first full-length, this is a strong, vibrant statement.
