Bregman reportedly inked a five-year, $175 million deal with the Cubs and will leave Boston after just one season with the team.
The Red Sox believed they were going to re-sign Bregman on a five-year, $165 million offer, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.
Including his 2025 deal that would have had Boston paying Bregman $205 million over six years.
There is real disappointment within the Red Sox organization about Bregman’s decision to leave for an extra $10 million, Olney adds.
When Bregman joined the Red Sox, they already had All-Star Rafael Devers at third base. Boston asked Devers to move to DH, and the team’s relationship with the slugger soured to the point that Devers was traded to San Francisco in June.
Bregman, 31, hit .314 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games in 2025.
