Kirk Cousins could be QB1 once again.
The Atlanta Falcons pivot is “highly likely” to start Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins as starter Michael Penix Jr. deals with a knee injury, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Saturday.
Cousins, 37, would be making his first start of the season, and his first since being benched last season just 14 games into a four-year, $180 million contract with Atlanta.
The 14-year veteran has appeared in just one game this season, completing five of seven passes for 29 yards late in a Week 3 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
After a hot start to his Falcons career, Cousins struggled down the stretch last season with just one touchdown and a whopping nine interceptions in his final five starts leading to his benching.
He was replaced by then-rookie Penix Jr., who did enough to win the starting job heading into this season.
But Penix Jr. suffered a bone bruise in his knee during the Falcons’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, and was limited in practice all week. Cousins took first-team reps in his place, per Schefter.
It would be a cushy spot for Cousins to make his return against a Dolphins defence that’s allowed the third-most points in the NFL.
Atlanta (3-3) will be looking to move above .500 on the season while Miami (1-6) vies for its second win.
