Mardaani 3, the third film in Yash Raj’s popular cop film series, hits cinemas on January 30. We can share the first trailer for the film above.
The film sees Rani Mukerji reprise her role as the uncompromising Shivani Shivaji Roy, who is in a race against time to rescue scores of unaccounted-for missing girls of India. The synopsis reads: This time, Shivani will take on a merciless, evil, powerful woman as the antagonist in a violent and brutal fight for justice for innocent lives.
Mardaani 3 was written by Aayush Gupta (The Railway Men). The film was directed by Abhiraj Minawala and produced by Aditya Chopra.
Yash Raj Films shared a statement from Mukerji on social media along with the trailer. Mukerji, an Indian-industry vet, said the release of Mardaani 3 will coincide with the 30th anniversary of her big screen debut.
“Thirty years… When I say that out loud, it feels unreal, but it also tells me that if you do something that you love from the bottom of your heart, time flies and you are left hungry for more,” she began in the statement.
“Thirty years ago, I stepped onto a film set with no grand plan of becoming an actress. It wasn’t a dream, I chased it was something that found me. A young girl, drawn into cinema almost by chance, hesitant at first… and yet, somewhere between instinct and vulnerability, I fell in love with the craft.”
She added: “Today, when I look back, I don’t count box office numbers or awards first. I count moments — standing under the rain for a shot, laughing between takes, crying after a difficult scene, and feeling that quiet satisfaction when a performance truly counts.”
Mardaani 2, released in 2019, was written and directed by Gopi Puthran and produced by Yash Raj. The second film follows Roy’s attempts to catch a 21-year-old rapist and murderer, played by Vishal Jethwa. The franchise has had critical and commercial success to date, and lead Mukerji has been discussed as a trailblazer for her role leading a Hindi action film.
