The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) will hold the Qatar International Derby on Saturday at the Al Rayyan Racecourse on turf.
There will be 10 races with top 16 horses vying for prizes amounting to $1.3 million, including half a million dollars for the feature tenth race – Qatar Derby for Thoroughbreds (only 3 years old) (Group 1), an international race over a distance of 2000 meters.
The winner the Qatar Derby qualifies for the Shalfah race, which will be held as part of the HH The Emir’s Sword Festival next February.
Nine other races will be held besides the main race, including the ninth race – the Qatar International Derby for Purebred Arabian Horses (only 4 years old) (Group Two), an international race over a distance of 2000 meters, with a prize money of $200,000.
The opening race will be held for the Al Rayyan Cup for Thoroughbreds (2 years old only) – a handicap with a rating of 0-85 over a distance of 1400m, with a prize of $50,000. The second race will be for locally bred Thoroughbreds for beginners that have won one or two races over a distance of 1600m, with a prize of $20,000. The third race will be held for the Derby Cup for Thoroughbreds (four years old and above) – a handicap with a rating of 75-95 over a distance of 2000m, with a prize of $30,000.
The winner of this race also qualifies for the Shalfah race within the HH The Amir’s Sword Festival.
The fourth race is the Thoroughbred Derby for locally bred horses (only 3 years old) (Class 1), over a distance of 1850m, with a prize of $75,000.
The fifth race is the Arabian Derby for locally bred horses (only 3 years old) (Class 1), over a distance of 1600m, with a prize of $75,000. The sixth race is the Qatar Arabian Derby for horses (only 3 years old) (Class 3), an international race over a distance of 1600m, with a prize of $100,000.
The seventh race is the Qatar National Derby for locally bred purebred Arabian horses (only 4 years old) (Grade 1), over a distance of 2000 meters, with a prize of $100,000.
The eighth race is the “Al Rayyan Stakes” for thoroughbred horses (only 2 years old) (Grade 1), which is also an international race over a distance of 1600 meters, with a prize of $150,000.
