Agra: A 30-year-old PhD scholar has accused a university professor of sexually exploiting her for nearly two years on the pretext of marriage, police said on Monday. Based on her complaint, an FIR has been registered in Agra under sections 69 (engaging in physical relations on a false promise of marriage), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 351 (criminal intimidation).
The complainant alleged that when she urged the professor to formalise their relationship, he threatened to defame her and fail her in her PhD.
According to the FIR, the scholar said that during her research, she frequently interacted with the accused professor for academic guidance. She alleged that he developed a personal relationship with her by promising marriage and later sexually exploited her for nearly two years. When she insisted that he fulfil his promise, the professor allegedly assaulted her and threatened to tarnish her reputation within the university.
DCP (City) Sayed Ali Abbas said, “We have registered the FIR under relevant sections. Police have launched an investigation, and the complainant has submitted incriminating evidence. Her statement will be recorded before a magistrate. The probe will be conducted on merit.”
University sources told TOI that an internal inquiry has also been initiated under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
