NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) — Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey is under a ground delay program on Sunday amid staffing shortages in the control tower.
Arrivals into Newark are being limited to as few as 20 planes per hour through Sunday afternoon, with higher rates expected later in the evening, NYC Emergency Management said.
Officials say the average delay at Newark Airport is currently about two hours, with some flights being more than three hours late. A full ground stop may be issued if staffing shortages or demand increases, according to planning notes from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Flights heading to Newark may be held on the ground at their origin airports amid the ground delay program. Meanwhile, flights departing from Newark may be delayed because gates stay occupied when arrivals are backed up.
In the meantime, passengers should anticipate impacts to travel into and out of the New York City area. Delays at Newark Airport often spread to other airfields, including at John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, officials say.
Officials recommend travelers check their flight status before heading to the airport, and to also be prepared for longer waits, schedule changes, gate holds or missed connections.
