To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, Naper Settlement hosted a Flag Raising Ceremony on Fri., Jan. 16. The special event kicked off a year to recognize the resilience of everyday people, mindful that Naperville’s contributions to America’s story continue to unfold and be told in the heart of the City at Naper Settlement, located at 523 S. Webster Street, along Aurora Avenue.
Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Naperville Central High School American Studies students, Revolutionary soldier reenactors and other community leaders had gathered to watch Naper Settlement begin its year of meaningful events.
An official commemorative America 250 Flag and new American Flag were raised by the Flag Unit from the Naperville American Legion Post 43 and Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 Color Guard.
The event began with welcoming and noteworthy remarks by Naperville Heritage Society Board Member Mike Milano who reminded all in attendance that “symbols matter” and the American flag stands for “sacrifice.”
Also providing brief meaningful remarks about this “powerful moment” to preserve our nation’s history and bring our community together were Mayor Scott Wehrli, Congressman Bill Foster (11th District), Naper Settlement President & CEO Macarena Tamayo-Calabrese and VFW Commander Staci Boyer.
Following the ceremony, refreshments were served and a short presentation showcasing military artifacts from the Naperville Heritage Society Collection was held in the Pre-Emption House, previewing the upcoming exhibit, “We the People: Naperville and the American Story.”
On President’s Day, February 16, 2026, Naper Settlement’s newest exhibit will open to the public.
