Get ready for solid box office numbers as Telugu film Akhanda 2 has opened with a respectable Rs 40 crore worldwide collection on its first day. The Nandamuri Balakrishna starrer collected approximately Rs 33 crore on its opening day in India, which includes Rs 9 crore from Thursday night previews. The film grossed another USD 850K, which translates to Rs 7.50 crore, from international markets. These numbers mark a strong start for the much awaited sequel, though trade experts feel the film could have done even better considering the brand value of the original.
On its face value, these are good numbers for the cast involved, ranking amongst the highest for lead actor Nandamuri Balakrishna. The opening day collections are better than his previous film Daaku Maharaj, which collected Rs 26 crore on its opening day earlier this year. However, this is not a standalone film but a sequel to the highly appreciated original Akhanda. Accordingly, the costs involved are also higher than a regular NBK film. Therefore, considering the brand value of the original film, the expectations were considerably higher, and the sequel has not really delivered on those.
Strong Performance Across Telugu States
Akhanda 2 performed well across the Telugu states with impressive numbers. Nizam had a record first day for an NBK film, surpassing Veera Simha Reddy. This shows the strong hold Balakrishna has in the Hyderabad region. However, Andhra Pradesh could have done better, especially in the Ceded districts, where not just the original was a huge blockbuster but NBK films generally fare strongly. The slightly lower than expected numbers in these key territories are a concern for the makers.
Decent Show In Other Markets
Elsewhere, Karnataka did well for the film, showing that the sequel has appeal beyond the core Telugu markets. Surprisingly, Tamil Nadu put up quite decent numbers, nearing the crore mark, which is impressive for a Telugu film in that region. There was a Hindi dubbed version released as well, but it was reportedly a non starter with hardly any collections. This shows that the film’s appeal is limited to the South Indian markets and has not been able to break through to the Hindi speaking audience.
What Lies Ahead For The Weekend
Looking ahead, the immediate task at hand for the film will be to hold well today and then make good gains over the weekend. The film was originally scheduled for release last week, but due to legal issues, it had to be postponed by a week. The postponement might have taken some business away, though reportedly not much. However, the initial response to the film seems to be mixed, and given the front loaded nature of this type of film, things could be difficult in terms of sustaining momentum through the week.
