The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe might be about to take an unexpected turn. Director Amar Kaushik has dropped a major hint that a cricketer could soon appear in the expanding cinematic universe, which has already become one of Bollywood’s most profitable and entertaining franchises in recent years.
From Stree to Thamma, MHCU continues to evolve
The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe began in 2018 with Stree, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor. It was followed by Roohi, Bhediya, and this year’s Munjya, which became one of 2024’s surprise hits. The latest installment, Thamma, released on October 21, 2025, and has further solidified Maddock’s position as the only production house in India to successfully create a connected horror-comedy franchise. Each film in the MHCU blends folklore, humor, and Indian mythology with pop culture cameos, keeping audiences hooked through clever crossovers.
“Kabhi koi cricketer bhi aa sakta hai…” says Amar Kaushik
In a recent chat with Bollywood Hungama, Amar Kaushik playfully said, “Kabhi koi cricketer bhi aa sakta hai… agar koi cricketer acting karna chahta hai toh batao.” The statement instantly sparked curiosity among fans, who began guessing which cricket star might be part of the MHCU next. While Kaushik didn’t name anyone, the comment opened the floodgates of speculation, with names like Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya being tossed around online.
He explained the process of building the MHCU and keeping surprises alive for the audience, “Hum log universe ki baat kar rahein hai… itne saare characters hai. Kabhi kabhi aa sakte hain – Shraddha, Ayushmann, Rajkummar, Varun… kabhi kabhi aa sakte hain. But aayenge, jaldi aayenge. Aur cricketer bhi aa sakta hai (We’re talking about building a universe… So many characters! Shraddha, Ayushmann, Rajkummar, Varun… all could come together anytime. And possibly a cricketer too)!”

Kaushik also elaborated on how item numbers, fight scenes, and Indian pop culture blend with supernatural themes, promising more crowd-pleasing moments, “Indian film hai, Hindi film hai. Toh usmein gaana toh hoga hi… sab aapke apne-apne favourite characters hain… aur shayad ab cricketer bhi (It’s an Indian film, it’s a Hindi film, there must be a song… everyone has their own favorite character… maybe now a cricketer too)!”
The idea of a cricket cameo fits perfectly with the MHCU’s quirky and unpredictable tone. It could also serve as a clever crossover between India’s two biggest obsessions of cinema and cricket, potentially pulling an even wider audience into the franchise.
What the tease means for the MHCU’s future
Amar Kaushik’s statement suggests that Maddock Films is ready to push the boundaries of genre and fandom with its next chapters. If a cricketer does make an appearance, it would mark the first time a major sports personality steps into the supernatural world of the MHCU. With upcoming films like Shakti Shalini already in development, audiences can expect more surprises and possibly the most unexpected cameo in the franchise’s history.
