Luka Dončić, who scored more points in the first two games of the season than any Los Angeles Laker player before him, will now be sidelined for approximately a week because of a left finger sprain and lower left leg contusion.
A league source told The Athletic there isn’t long-term concern with the injuries. Still, the Lakers play three road games against Western Conference teams this week beginning Sunday in Sacramento. The Lakers host Portland on Monday before heading to Minnesota and Memphis for games on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
Dončić scored 92 points over the Lakers’ first two games and turned in a 49-point, 11-rebound, eight-assist masterpiece Friday in a win against the Timberwolves.
The loss is a tough one for Dončić, 26, and the Lakers early in the year. The team already has been without LeBron James, who has been sidelined with a sciatic nerve issue and will be reevaluated in three to four weeks. Additionally, backup center Jaxson Hayes will also miss Sunday’s game with the Kings because of knee soreness. Rookie Adou Thiero and Maxi Kleber were also listed as out, leaving the Lakers with just nine healthy players.
Dončić’s finger sprain and leg contusion are the first hiccups since he transformed his body this offseason, decisions he made in an effort to be more available after playing just 50 games last season.
Through two games, Dončić is averaging 46 points, 11.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists on 62 percent shooting from the field.
