JC Health Department plans Wellness Day – The Sentinel
MOUNT VERNON — The Jefferson County Health Department (JCHD) will host its inaugural “Spooktacular” Wellness Day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the local health department.
The new annual event will give residents the chance to explore the many health services that JCHD provides, and to take proactive steps toward better health. A wide range of services will be available at reduced cost, or completely free, to help make wellness more accessible for all, states a JCHD news release.
Some examples of discounted services that will be offered that day include: a wellness lab bundle (CBC, CMP, lipid panel and TSH) for $35, oral fluoride treatments for $10, flu shots for $25, PSA (men) for $20, and A1C for $15. Free services will include blood pressure checks, cancer screenings, and podiatrist diabetic foot exams and education, the release states.
SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital and Deaconess Illinois Crossroads are partnering with the health department to offer screenings and education at the Wellness Day. Narcan and gun locks will be available at no charge to attendees. Other community partners will also be present with giveaways and valuable health information for attendees of all ages, the release states.
“We hope everyone comes out and takes advantage of the great services and resources we will have available,” said JCHD Administrator Amy Harrison. “Our staff has been working hard to make this event both informative and fun. We are incredibly lucky to have organizations like SSM Good Samaritan, Deaconess Crossroads, and other community partners that care as much about the health of our residents as we do.”
Gayla Hall, RN, Clinical Research Coordinator for SSM Health Cancer Care in Mount Vernon, will be one of the health officials in attendance at the Wellness Day.
“At SSM Health Cancer Care, we’re proud to join the health department’s free health fair and be part of a community-wide effort to promote wellness. Lung cancer is the most common cancer in our region, and early detection through screenings can truly make a difference,” Hall said. “This event is a great opportunity to talk with our neighbors about the importance of both lung, prostate, colon, and breast screenings — and how taking action today can lead to healthier tomorrows.”
Nicholas Vogelsang, DPM, a Podiatrist at Deaconess Illinois Specialty Clinic, also remarked on the significance of this event.
“The Wellness Day at the Jefferson County Health Department highlights the importance of preventative care. Screenings such as diabetic foot exams are simple steps that can lead to early detection, improved outcomes and a stronger, healthier community,” Vogelsang said.
The Jefferson County Health Department is located at 4102 S. Water Tower Place in Mount Vernon. For more information on this event or other JCHD services, call (618) 244-7134.
