The Folio Society is marking the 40th anniversary of “Howl’s Moving Castle” with a lavish new limited-edition release that elevates Diana Wynne Jones’ fantasy classic into a collectible centerpiece.
Limited to just 500 copies, Folio’s 40th Anniversary Limited Edition of “Howl’s Moving Castle” will be published on March 24, 2026, priced at £475 ($650) and available exclusively through the Folio Society. The edition includes a newly commissioned fold-out map of Ingary, printed on metallic paper and presented in its own dedicated map case. The book itself is quarter-bound in leather with printed art-silk sides, housed in a cloth-bound slipcase silk-screen printed with original artwork by illustrator Marie-Alice Harel. A cut-out window in the box reveals the map case beneath, designed to echo the four portals connecting the worlds Howl travels between.
The new edition features brand-new illustrations by Harel, whose work will appear extensively throughout the book, including two new full-color images. Illustrations are hand-tipped onto the page within decorative borders, while each chapter title is hand-lettered by the artist. The volume also includes an exclusive new foreword by Diana Wynne Jones’ son, Michael Burrow, alongside an introduction by the late author and illustrator Marcus Sedgwick.
First published in 1986, “Howl’s Moving Castle” became an international bestseller before reaching an even broader global audience through Hayao Miyazaki’s animated adaptation for Studio Ghibli. The film broke box-office records in Japan upon release and earned an Academy Award nomination.
“We’re excited to share our Limited Edition of one of the world’s greatest fantasy novels with the book’s generations of fans,” James Rose, Head of Editorial at the Folio Society, said in a statement. “Never has Sophie and Howl’s magical world been bettered in print.”
