Due to the struggles that the Florida State Seminoles have gone through this season following their opening upset win over the Alabama Crimson Tide, calls have begun getting louder for the program to consider firing head coach Mike Norvell.
Following three straight wins to begin the 2025 college football season, the Seminoles have lost four straight. Coming out of their Week 9 bye week, Florida State will now prepare to take on Wake Forest on November 1.
Norvell has had major ups and even bigger downs since taking over as the Seminoles head coach back in 2020. He has compiled a 36-31 overall record, while going 20-24 in ACC play.

Just two years ago in 2023, Norvell had Florida State at 13-1. Unfortunately, an injury to star quarterback Jordan Travis made the committee decide to keep the Seminoles out of the College Football Playoff.

Since that season, Florida State has gone steadily downhill. A change could very well be coming for the program.
If the Seminoles do decide to move on from Norvell, who could they target to replace him? There are quite a few names who have already been brought up as possible candidates.
Deion Sanders is one of the most popular names when it comes to the Florida State head coaching job. He has been struggling mightily this season with the Colorado Buffaloes, but a reunion with the former superstar defensive back is interesting to think about for the Seminoles. However, there are other candidates to monitor.
With that being said, Jonathan Adams of College Football HQ on SI has come up with a surprising option. He thinks that South Florida head coach Alex Golesh could be a potential hire.
“Hiring a Group of 5 head coach comes with its own challenges, but plucking one from another Sunshine State school could ease the transition. It would not be a surprise if USF’s Alex Golesh had multiple Power 4 jobs to choose from,” Adams wrote.
“Golesh has already proven capable of leading a team to victory over Power 4 opponents. If Florida State strikes out at landing a potential big fish, don’t be surprised if Golesh gains some traction in Tallahassee.”

Golesh has been the head coach at South Florida since the 2023 season. He has a career record of 20-14.
The Seminoles hiring a smaller name like Golesh would be a bit of a surprise. However, if they feel that he gives them the best chance to rebuild a championship contender, he might very well be the choice.
