Key Insights on Fastest Batters to Reach 8000 Runs in One Day Internationals
Record Holders for Quickest Ascent to 8K ODI Runs by Innings and Time
Virat Kohli is the fastest batter to score 8000 ODI runs, reaching the landmark in 175 innings. This is also the first time Virat topped any ‘Fastest 1000X‘ chart in ODIs, thanks to his phenomenal phase of batting between the years of 2016 and 2019. It is also the time when he set an unbreakable record of scoring the most runs in 50 consecutive ODI innings in the history of the format.
Kohli is also the fastest to the milestone in terms of time taken, scoring his 8000th ODI run in eight years and 301 days from his debut.
Desmond Haynes was the first-ever batter to surpass the landmark in 219 innings back in February 1993.
Unique 8000 ODI Run Milestones by Role and Batting Position
Rohit Sharma has taken the fewest innings as an opener to aggregate 8000 ODI runs, reaching there in 160 innings while opening for India.
MS Dhoni is the quickest among the three wicketkeepers with 8000-plus runs, attaining the mark in 214 ODI innings.
Ricky Ponting is the only captain to score 8000-plus runs in ODIs, crossing the landmark run in his 212th innings as Australia’s skipper.
Extremes in Time Taken and Strike Rate for 8K ODI Runs
Shahid Afridi is the slowest to reach 8000 ODI runs, taking 367 innings.
Likewise, Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal took the longest time, getting past the mark in 15 years and 177 days after his debut.
Sri Lanka’s Marvan Atapattu (15y 52d) and West Indies’ Desmond Haynes (15y 5d) are the other batters to take more than 15 years to score 8000 ODI runs.
While Afridi is the slowest by innings, he took the fewest balls to complete 8000 ODI runs, crossing the mark in 6857 balls at a strike rate of 116.67. The reason behind this is that Afridi often batted in the lower-order for Pakistan, sometimes very deep. He is one of the very few batters to have scored close to 2000 runs in ODI cricket batting at number 7.
Highest Batting Average Upon Reaching the 8000-Run Mark
Kohli had an average of 54.58 at the time he crossed the milestone. This is the highest average for a batter after completing 8000 runs in ODIs.
