MANILA, Philippines — Billionaire Enrique Razon has filed cyberlibel complaints against suspended Cavite Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga over his pronouncements against the business tycoon.
Razon filed the complaints against Barzaga before the Makati City Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday, January 14.
The complaint centers on a January 9 Facebook post by Barzaga alleging that Razon bribed lawmakers of the National Unity Party (NUP) at Solaire to support Speaker Martin Romualdez’s leadership, according to Razon’s lawyer, Laurence Arroyo.
Citing emotional distress and reputational damage, Razon is suing for two counts of cyberlibel and is seeking P100 million in moral damages and an additional P10 million in exemplary damages, according to media reports.
On January 13, NUP chairman Rep. Ronaldo Puno (Antipolo 1st District) said the party will also file complaints against Barzaga.
“We will see him in court, since he chose to malign all members of the NUP—a party once led by his own father and one that he himself joined,” Puno said.
In response to Razon’s complaint, Barzaga said he is ready to face the tycoon.
“I am prepared to face Enrique Razon in court, the sooner, the better!” Barzaga said.
Barzaga is currently suspended from Congress for 60 days as a penalty for posting lewd and inappropriate social media content. The disciplinary action followed an ethics committee review and took effect on December 1.
