The Egyptian national team lost to the Nigerian national team 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the third-place playoff of the tournament.
Al-Shenawy said in statements on “beIN Sports” channel after the match: “I thank the players for delivering a great performance, both against Nigeria and throughout the Africa Cup of Nations. Some did not expect us to reach this stage, but we succeeded in making it to the semifinals and then lost the third-place match on penalties.”
He added: “The players were men, and they followed the instructions throughout the Africa Cup of Nations.”
He continued: “The third-place match is always ‘tough’ on the players, and some do not like to play it… but for me, it is always an opportunity to try out more players.”
He concluded: “The Egyptian national team benefited from the match against Nigeria and gained more than one new player who has acquired additional international experience, and that is enough for us.”
