Egyptian media reports of a fatal stabbing in the Red Sea resort city of Hurghada have been confirmed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The victim was a 31-year-old man from Noord-Holland, who died during the overnight hours of Tuesday leading into Wednesday. One of the victim’s colleagues was also severely wounded during the altercation and is currently in the intensive care unit.
Earlier reports in local Egyptian media incorrectly identified the victim as being 21 years old. The man is said to have been fatally wounded during an altercation at a café in the marina, where he was stabbed and reportedly died from abdominal injuries and blood loss before police reached the scene. Two suspects have been arrested.
Eyewitnesses told AD that the victim had gotten involved in a dispute over women. He had been sitting on a terrace with several Egyptian women when an Egyptian man took issue, sparking an altercation.
A group of Dutch friends was visiting the resort, with the victim and his colleague having arrived just a day before the stabbing. According to reports, the son of one witness was summoned away by a woman, and upon returning, he discovered his friends bloodied in the town square.
Eyewitnesses say the situation quickly escalated, with shouting and a dark-haired person behaving aggressively just before the police arrived. Egyptian sources report that Major General Ayman Hamzawi notified the Red Sea regional security service about the altercation.
The victim has been taken to the morgue at the Red Sea Hospital. Local authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, Cairo24 reported.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is supporting the victim’s family.
Hurghada is a major tourist destination on the Red Sea, with many hotels, resorts, bars, and cafés, attracting large numbers of European tourists every year.
