CDC Issues Measles Update as Number of Cases Grows

More than 1,000 cases of measles have been reported across the U.S. as of Thursday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

There have been 1,001 confirmed cases of measles across 31 states and jurisdictions as of May 8, the CDC said in its Friday update.
The affected states and one city are: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
Fourteen confirmed measles outbreaks have occurred in the first five months of 2025 and 93 percent of confirmed cases are “outbreak-associated,” the CDC added. An outbreak is defined as three or more related cases.
The health agency noted that by comparison, there were 16 outbreaks reported all of last year and 69 percent of the cases were outbreak-associated.
