In response to the rising number of traffic accidents involving delivery riders on high-speed lanes, the UAE has implemented new traffic regulations in Dubai starting from November 1. These changes aim to enhance road safety by prohibiting delivery bikes from using the two leftmost lanes on roads with five or more lanes, as well as the furthest left lane on roads with three or four lanes. This move comes after a significant uptick in accidents linked to reckless riding behavior, and the goal is to reduce such incidents, ensuring safer conditions for all road users in the city.
Starting from November 1, the UAE has introduced new traffic regulations in Dubai to enhance road safety, particularly for delivery riders, following a significant rise in accidents involving them on high-speed lanes. The new rules prohibit delivery bikes from using the two leftmost lanes on roads with five or more lanes, aiming to reduce reckless riding and ensure safer conditions for all road users.
Starting from November 1, Dubai has implemented significant changes to its traffic regulations that specifically target delivery riders, following a surge in accidents involving them on high-speed lanes.
Under the new laws enforced by Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), delivery bikes will no longer be allowed to use the leftmost lanes on major roads, especially those with five lanes or more. Delivery riders will also be restricted from using the second left lane on roads with three or four lanes. However, on roads with two lanes or fewer, delivery bikes are not subject to any lane restrictions.
These new rules come in response to a growing concern over the increasing number of traffic accidents involving delivery riders on high-speed roads. In 2024, there were 854 traffic accidents involving delivery bikes in high-speed lanes, with the number rising to 962 incidents this year alone.
In an effort to curb these accidents, Dubai Police and the RTA have also outlined a set of new fines and penalties for riders who fail to comply with the new regulations. The fines for violating the lane restrictions are as follows:
- A Dhs500 fine for the first offence
- A Dhs700 fine for the second offence
- A suspension of permits for a third violation
Additionally, riders who exceed the speed limit of 100km/h on roads with a 100km/h speed limit will face fines based on the number of violations:
- Dhs200 fine for the first incident
- Dhs300 fine for the second incident
- Dhs400 fine for the third incident
These fines and the threat of permit suspensions highlight the seriousness of the new laws. The delivery sector in Dubai, which includes major players like Careem, Deliveroo, Talabat, Amazon, and others, has grown rapidly with the city’s expanding population. This expansion has led to an increase in delivery riders on the roads, which in turn has raised concerns about their safety and behavior while on high-speed lanes.
To ensure better compliance with these new regulations, new traffic signs will be installed on major roads, serving as a reminder to delivery riders to avoid the fast lanes. These signs will be placed alongside existing signs that prohibit trucks and other heavy vehicles from using high-speed lanes.
The new laws are part of an ongoing effort by Dubai authorities to improve road safety and reduce violations, especially among delivery riders who have been at the center of a significant rise in traffic offences in the past year. As more people turn to delivery services for their everyday needs, ensuring safe and responsible riding practices has become a priority for the RTA and Dubai Police.
With the increase in the number of delivery services in Dubai, it is clear that these new measures are a necessary step to curb reckless behavior on the roads. By addressing the issue of lane violations and setting clearer traffic guidelines for delivery riders, authorities hope to improve overall safety for all road users.
Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, has expressed confidence that the new regulations will lead to improved rider behavior, contributing to safer roads and a reduction in accidents involving delivery bikes.
As the delivery sector continues to play a pivotal role in the daily life of Dubai residents, these regulations aim to strike a balance between enabling the efficient operation of these services and ensuring the safety of both delivery riders and the public.
