Fox News anchors John Roberts and Gillian Turner couldn’t help but find some amusement in President Donald Trump’s declaration that “everything” is the fault of Democrats.
On America Reports Thursday, the network aired Trump speaking to reporters in Florida, where he blamed Democrats for the current government shutdown. Democrats and Republicans remain at a standstill over a continuing resolution to fund the government with Democrats demanding expiring subsidies in the Affordable Care Act be included.
Trump said:
It’s their fault. Everything is their fault. It’s so easily solved. You know, we have a number of Democrats that have already voted for this, but the Republicans are very unified, they’re very strong, and they want to do what’s right for the country. They don’t want to see trillions of dollars wasted on people that came into our country illegally, many from prisons and many from areas that you don’t want to even know about. So we’d like to see this taken care of rapidly. You have a lot of — we have tremendous support, but it’s not even support. It’s common sense. Open up the country. Obamacare has turned out to be a disaster, as I’ve been saying for years. It can be fixed or redone. People don’t get good health care and their premiums go up every single year so we should change it. It’s a disaster. Obamacare is bad health care at a very high price. So tonight we have a big celebration of Halloween and I’ll see you later.
Turner repeated the “everything is their fault” line and admitted it got a chuckle out of her.
“He also said, quote, ‘everything is their fault.’ I don’t know. I got to chuckle out of that,” she said.
Roberts argued that polling does back up Trump’s point.
“Well, I mean, you know, you look at the polling and more people are on the side of Republicans than are on side of Democrats, but there’s no question that the pressure points are beginning to build on the Democrats,” he said.
CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten pointed out earlier this week that is showing a shutdown bump for Republicans and “concerning” numbers for Democrats.
“When we’re looking at the Republican Party overall, that brand, actually up two points,” he reported. “That’s within the margin of error, but clearly it hasn’t dropped… look at the net approval ratings for Republicans in Congress. It’s actually up five points since pre-shutdown! So what we’re seeing here is the Republican brand in Congress has actually improved somewhat compared to where we were pre-shutdown.”
