Since 2012 Donner has been making affordable, quality instruments and electronic devices for at home and live purposes. The brands latest offering the Donner Mamp2 is a streamlined dual channel, 600 Watt stereo receiver that will instantly take your home theater setup to the next level.
Following in the foots steps of the previously released MAmp5 the Mamp2 features a streamlined user friendly front panel with separate Left and Right channel volumes and a standard EQ section with additional Echo and Mic volume controls. The EQ portion can be customized to the users liking or can be set to one of the units included pre-sets. Also found on the receivers front panel are controls for the bluetooth connectivity along with two mic inputs, one auxiliary input, one usb input and a master volume knob. The Mamp2’s standard digital display is minimally basic however, it does do a decent job informing users which output the amp is set to (Phono, AM/FM, Blutooth, Line) thanks to its brightness and size.
Tha Mamp2’s back panel also received a complete rework and includes a multiple zone speaker output section allowing for connection of up to four speakers within each of the two channels (zones) and dedicated subwoofer and line out outputs. Also included are connections for an FM antenna and Digital Optical/Coaxial connections. The input section of the Mamp2 includes a dedicated Phono input (a first for the Mamp Line) and a standard Line in. Though I prefer the more robust connection options of the Mamp5 the newly added Phono dedicated line nicely elevates the need for additional pre-amps without sacrificing tone or clarity.
Though we were not dissatisfied with the unit by any means we did find it to have a few short comings when compared to its predecessor. One being the lack of front panel lighting which makes operation in low light settings quite difficult. We also noticed that when the power button on the unit is engaged and then turned off via the remote the amp does not completely turn off. After a few hours of inactivity we noticed a very audible fan hum coming from the receiver despite it clearly being powered off. This occurred several times and the only way to remedy the situation was to depress the front power button leading us to believe using the remote solely to power the unit off and on would not be the best way to operate the receiver.
Donner’s Mamp2 packs a lot of options in to a small quality unit with a price tag of just $99.99. The unit easily competes with similar units whose prices more than double the cost of the Mamp2. From it’s easy to use interface, ample output power and wide variety of connectivity options those looking for a new home theater receiver will be hard pressed to find another that can compete with the Mamp2. If the basic features weren’t enough to entice you then the added karaoke features (mic inputs and talk over) and the newly added multi-button remote should act as the proverbial icing on the cake as we certainly enjoyed the versatility the receiver brought to our home system.
