Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned Sunday that trade flows are likely to shift away from the United States “for a period of time” following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a new 10 percent tariff on Canadian goods, saying the move will make it “more expensive to trade with the United States.”
Speaking at the ASEAN Business and Investment forum in Kuala Lumpur, Carney said the Trump administration’s focus on protectionism and its reluctance to prioritize low-carbon economic growth risk undermining American competitiveness. He argued that Canada will increasingly look to strengthen ties elsewhere as tariffs and diverging climate policies reshape global supply chains. Carney’s comments marked his first public reaction since Trump announced the tariff increase on Saturday, escalating tensions between two of the world’s largest trading partners.
