In celebration of 25 years of Gilmore Girls, the show’s co-creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, shared inside information about how the series came to be in an October 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
While speaking to the publication, Sherman-Palladino explained she was pitching several shows to The WB, when she mentioned her idea for Gilmore Girls, which focuses on Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel), in “a last-ditch” effort.
“I said, ‘I’ve got this sort of thing that’s like a mother and daughter, and they’re more like friends than mother-daughter,’ and they’re like, ‘Oh, we’ll buy that one,'” recalled Sherman-Palladino in the interview.
In addition, Sherman-Palladino, who created the show alongside her husband, Daniel Palladino, said she believed Gilmore Girls found success due to “alchemy.” She suggested that the dramedy didn’t have that much support from Warner Bros. She also said that she didn’t believe the show, which had a seven-season run until 2007, could make it to air in the modern day.
“Because we were really left alone to build our worlds and our characters. [Warner Bros.] gave up on even trying to give us notes on the scripts. They didn’t understand the scripts. It wasn’t soapy enough for them,” said Sherman-Palladino in the interview. “There were too many pop culture references they didn’t understand. At every turn, we were not necessarily what they wanted or what they thought they needed, but it was a different time. Today, a Gilmore Girls would not get on the air. No way, no how.”
Amy Sherman-Palladino Said Filming ‘Gilmore Girls’ Was Stressful
Sherman-Palladino told The Hollywood Reporter that the Gilmore Girls set was a stressful environment for the cast and crew. According to Sherman-Palladino, they couldn’t “reshoot anything” on the show, meaning “if [they] didn’t get it, [they] didn’t get it.”
“We were all in a panic constantly, so there was no cozy vibe at all. It was very frantic. We were shooting 80 pages in eight days, so 10 pages a day with no hiatuses and no breaks, and we were doing 22 episodes. I don’t know how we did it,” said Sherman-Palladino in the interview.
Lauren Graham & Amy Sherman-Palladino Are Willing to Return to ‘Gilmore Girls’
In 2016, a four-episode revival of Gilmore Girls premiered on Netflix, titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in a Life. In an August 2025 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Graham said she would be willing to reprise her Gilmore Girls character in a Christmas special. She explained that fans could see their beloved Gilmore Girls characters again in said special, without having to do another full reboot.
In an April 2025 interview with TooFab, Sherman-Palladino said she would be willing to make a Christmas Gilmore Girls special for Graham.
“I want to work with Lauren for the rest of my life. So, you know, if she wants snow, I’m going to give her snow,” said the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator to the publication.
