The project aims to attract 330,000 visitors annually while preserving the desert’s natural systems.
A new lake and environmental destination spanning one million square meters, the Al Layan Oasis project has been launched in Dubai to enhance eco-tourism and urban sustainability.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the Al Layan Oasis development project. This new environmental and recreational destination will span one million square meters and feature a massive lake covering more than 250,000 square meters. The project is designed to showcase the beauty of the desert while enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors. Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that Dubai’s urban development follows an integrated model that prioritizes sustainability and places people at the center of all infrastructure planning.
Part of the Blue and Green Roadmap 2030
Al Layan Oasis is a key initiative under the recently launched Blue and Green Roadmap 2030 by Dubai Municipality. This roadmap represents a broader vision to invest in nature and create an urban environment that balances sustainability with livability, supported by projects valued at over AED4 billion ($1.1 billion). The oasis also aligns with several strategic frameworks, including the Dubai Countryside and Rural Areas Development Plan, the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, all of which aim to preserve natural landscapes while providing world-class facilities.

Enhancing wellbeing and eco-tourism
His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, noted that the project highlights Dubai’s ability to leverage environmental assets to create social and economic value. Designed to be a tranquil desert stop located about 50 minutes from the city center, the oasis is expected to attract 330,000 visitors annually. It will feature native planting, shaded areas, and resource-efficient solutions to ensure environmental sustainability while promoting physical and mental wellbeing for the community.

Integrated infrastructure and recreation
The development includes 14 kilometers of walking and cycling tracks, including 4 kilometers of elevated paths that rise five meters above the ground to offer panoramic views. To accommodate visitors, the site will provide 1,000 parking spaces and link directly with existing routes in Al Marmoom. The project is divided into four distinct zones:
- The Gathering Oasis: Featuring an open-air cinema, amphitheater, and event spaces.
- The Family Oasis: Providing 28 rest areas and children’s play zones.
- The Camping Oasis: Equipped for 100 caravans and including an environmental education center.
- The Recreation Oasis: Offering retail outlets and various outdoor activities.
Public-private partnership opportunities
As part of its commitment to stimulating the local economy, Dubai Municipality is offering approximately 365,000 square meters of investment opportunities within the project. Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency, stated that these partnerships with the private sector will help deliver innovative services and high-quality facilities. This strategic collaboration ensures that Al Layan Oasis becomes a premier global destination for environmental tourism while safeguarding the desert’s unique natural character.
