Poor Sydney Sweeney cannot breathe, blink, or launch a lingerie line without the comment section trying to turn her into a political mascot.
The Euphoria and Housemaid star is officially addressing the nonstop online chatter labeling her “MAGA Barbie,” and spoiler alert: she is NOT here for it.
Sydney, 28, opened up to Cosmopolitan this week while promoting the launch of her new lingerie brand SYRN. (Great name, BTW! It’s giving SKIMS vibes while being perfectly tuned to Sydney’s, um, assets.) Anyway, what should have been a glam, boss-girl moment turned into yet another interrogation about her supposed political beliefs. Because of course it did.

When asked about being dubbed “MAGA Barbie” for her supposed right-leaning vibe and family ties by strangers online who do not know her, have never met her, and are clearly very bored, Sydney did not mince words:
“I’ve never been here to talk about politics. I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of. And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it’s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that.”
Oof. That sounds like someone who is exhausted by the noise.
And honestly? Fair. Cosmo pushed further and asked why she doesn’t just shut the rumors down once and for all. Sydney’s answer was painfully real and very internet-coded:
“I haven’t figured it out. I’m not a hateful person. If I say, ‘That’s not true,’ they’ll come at me like, ‘You’re just saying that to look better.’ There’s no winning. There’s never any winning.”
She’s not wrong. The moment a celebrity responds, the pitchforks just get sharper.
And Sydney seems to know that trying to please everyone is a losing game, so she’s choosing to protect her peace instead:
“I just have to continue being who I am, because I know who I am. I can’t make everyone love me. I know what I stand for.”
This whole mess traces back to last year’s American Eagle jeans campaign that spiraled into controversy and somehow even got President Donald Trump name-dropping Sydney after reports surfaced that she’s a registered Republican.
Sydney later said she was shocked by the backlash and made it clear she does not support the views people projected onto her. She even admitted that her past silence may have made things worse instead of better.

And if anyone is still confused, she spelled it out AGAIN in the Cosmo interview:
“I’m in the arts. I’m not here to speak on politics. That’s not an area I’ve ever even imagined getting into. It’s not why I became who I am. I became an actor because I like to tell stories, but I don’t believe in hate in any form. I believe we should all love each other and have respect and understanding for one another.”
So, there you have it. Sydney is not your political Barbie, not your pawn, and definitely not your culture war cosplay doll. She just wants to make art, sell lingerie, and mind her business.
Is that really too much to ask in 2026? Honestly, with the direction we’re headed as a society right now, it probably is. But she said what she said.
