Lab-confirmed flu cases are continuing to decline, with roughly 2,200 reported last week, a 43% drop from the previous week, according to data from the city’s health department.
Just a month ago, the city recorded more than 32,000 cases in a single week. But even with numbers falling, officials are urging New Yorkers to remain cautious.
“Flu numbers are heading in the right direction, but the virus is unpredictable and flu season won’t be over for another few months,” said Dr. Toni Eyssallenne, the health department’s deputy chief medical officer.
Last year’s flu season was the deadliest on record for children nationwide, with 289 pediatric deaths reported. Of those who were eligible for the vaccine, 89% had not received it, according to the health department.
In addition to flu, the city tracks RSV and COVID-19 trends. RSV rates remain elevated, with more than 2,200 lab-confirmed cases last week and little decline over the past month. COVID-19 levels are low and falling.
City health officials are urging residents to take precautions, including getting vaccinated, staying home when sick and washing hands regularly.
