A school bus filled with children was struck by a vehicle in Newport News Friday afternoon, leaving children with apparently minor injuries.
Newport News police responded to a report of a crash near the intersection where 80th Street and 81st Street meet Marshall Avenue at about 3:16 p.m. A jeep hit the bus while it was carrying about 40 students from Crittenden Middle School, police said.
A police spokesperson said 11 children complained of “minor discomfort” following the wreck, and seven were taken to a local hospital for treatment. A recording of the scanner traffic from the time of the crash shows the initial report was that “roughly 10 kids on the school bus are complaining of head injuries.”
Another bus helped take children home, according to police.
The woman driving the jeep was not injured. Police cited her for failing to yield the right of way coming from a private drive and driving without insurance.
