Perhaps mercifully, Jonathan Quick‘s night at Madison Square Garden ended early.
The New York Rangers pulled their starting goalie midway through the second period after allowing six goals on 17 shots.
Quick was replaced in net by third-string goalie Spencer Martin.
Things got ugly very fast for the Rangers, who allowed the first goal less than three minutes into the game on a power play. By the time the buzzer sounded on the opening frame, the Senators had piled on four goals to the Rangers’ zero.
Fans at MSG booed the Rangers off the ice.
The final nail in the coffin was a second-period goal from Thomas Chabot, which beat Quick blocker-side to bring the score to 6-0.
The 39-year-old Quick has assumed starter’s duties after an injury to Igor Shesterkin. Prior to Wednesday, the three-time Stanley Cup champion posted a .898 save percentage and 2.80 goals-against average in 14 games, earning one shutout.
Martin, 30, has suited up for one game for the Rangers this season, earning a .714 save percentage.
The Rangers, 20-21-6 and last in the Metropolitan Division, are in the midst of a four-game losing streak.
