Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty has stressed Egypt’s firm support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Abdelatty made the remarks during his meeting with Sudan’s Foreign Minister Muhi al-Din Salem on the sidelines of an extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The two ministers discussed the latest developments in Sudan and ways of fostering bilateral cooperation, as well as means of enhancing coordination on regional issues of common concern.
The top Egyptian diplomat underlined the need for uniting regional and international efforts to reach a humanitarian truce leading to a comprehensive ceasefire in Sudan.
Abdelatty also underlined the importance of providing safe havens and ensuring the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
He also condemned grave violations committed against Sudanese civilians in El Fasher city and North Kordofan state.
The pair also tackled regional updates, where Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s total rejection of Israel’s recognition of the so-called “Somaliland”.
In this regard, the Egyptian foreign minister said this illegal Israeli measure contravenes international law, infringes upon the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, and undermines the foundations of stability in the Horn of Africa region.
Regarding the issue of water security, the two ministers said Egypt and Sudan share the same stance as being among downstream nations, affirming the paramount importance of close coordination in defending their Nile water rights and safeguarding the interests of the Egyptian and Sudanese peoples.
They also reaffirmed their rejection of unilateral measures that violate international law in the Eastern Nile Basin.
