We recently spent some time with the Mercedes-AMG GLE53 4Matic+, which, oddly, does not feature the brand’s latest hybrid tech.
Mercedes-Benz was renowned for producing executive saloons. That has since expanded to include SUVs, many SUVs. In fact, for every saloon range there is a corresponding SUV. The GLE range is, essentially, the E-class in SUV guise. And just like the saloon siblings, every SUV range also boasts a high performance AMG derivative.

The Mercedes-AMG GLE53 is not the apex of the GLE AMG variants on offer, that mantle goes to the GLE63s. The latter still boasts the company’s twin-turbocharged V8. The subject of this reviewed is powered by an inline-six, hence the ’53’ part of its badge. More on this in a bit. In fact, the GLE53 can trace its legacy back to the company’s first performance SUV, the ML55 AMG.
Different Appearance
Mercedes’ GLE range has recently undergone a bit of a facelift. The changes are merely cosmetic, such as a new headlamp design and DRLs. As an AMG derivative the GLE53 has several cues that mark it out a performance version. Among these are the vertical slats on the front grille, referred to as Panamericana in Merc speak. There’s also a more squat appearance. In addition the ’53’ rides on massive, 22-inch (optional) alloys wrapped in high performance footwear. As a result the GLE53 has a bit more aggro than its siblings.
Fully Loaded
The Mercedes-AMG GLE53 features the company’s twin-screen facia layout. The centre screen boasts Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system, complete with voice controlled functionality. MB SA specced the test unit with a loud, dual-tone interior treatment: red over black Alcantara. While not entirely to our tastes, it did help break up the otherwise sombre cabin. A full-length panoramic roof also lets plenty of ambient light into the cabin. There is also carbon-fibre trim to underline the car’s performance credentials.
This model, as with other GLEs, does not lack for space. Three adults can fit comfortably on the rear bench and there is also loads of boot volume. Mercedes, along with many others, used to come under fire for being a bit sparse on standard equipment levels. However, reading the Mercedes-AMG GLE53 spec sheets shows that items such as keyless entry, heated seats, smartphone integration, MBUX Augmented Reality Navigation, fingerprint sensor and many others are all standard. Of course, there are a few pre-packaged items that one can spec as per your requirements/bank balance.

Turbo Six
As mentioned earlier, the GLE53 is powered by an inline-six. This turbocharged unit is supplemented by a mild hybrid component. The engine is good for 320 kW with a healthy 560 N.m of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. We find it a little odd that Mercedes does not offer the plug-in hybrid powertrain that is fitted to the latest E53. That, more advanced, powertrain with higher torque output makes far more sense to us in a vehicle as large as the GLE – bizarre.

At any rate, the turbocharged motor provides plenty of shove. It pushes the circa-2,4 ton machine from rest to 100 km/h in 5 seconds flat. It feels subjectively quick, although even more impressive when you mash the throttle while on the move, as opposed to from a standing start. Oh, and AMG boffins have also tuned the exhaust note to sound quite race-y, with the odd crackle on a trailing throttle or pop on a full throttle up-shift if you are in the right driving mode.
On the Move
Whenever we drive a performance SUV, such as this, we are impressed by how engineers can bend the laws of physics. Advances in tyre and suspension tech have come a long way and it is very clear to see at play in a car such as the GLE53. With two passengers the GLE53 tips the scales at over 2,5 tons, but behaves like a sports saloon. You can really chuck it into corners, safe in the knowledge that it will stick. You can also climb on the loud pedal early as you exit corners, assured of maximum traction from all four wheel.
Summary
Things have progressed quite far from the launch of that very first ML55. Mercedes has become a real force in the performance car world, providing more-than-worthy rivals for the likes of Porsche and BMW’s M division. The GLE53 is an able foil, not quite as heavy hitting as the GLE63s, but also far easier on the wallet. However, it isn’t ‘cheap’ in comparison. At roughly R2,5m there are plenty of really good options to choose from. There are regular foes such as the Audi Q7 and the BMW X7. Both brands offer performance derivatives that are fitted with more powerful, V8 engines. Then, there is the small matter of the Porsche Cayenne, particularly in sporty GTS guise. The Porsche is, arguably, the best sporting option ie made for those who place dynamics foremost on their list of priorities.
