One person died in a late Thursday night fire near Langley Air Force Base in Hampton.
The fire, in a rural area on Tidewater Drive off Armistead Avenue, was called in just after 11 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue.
When fire division personnel arrived, they found a large fire that had fully engulfed a house, with several nearby vehicles on fire.
The house’s rural surroundings “posed a water-supply challenge for extinguishing the fire,” according to the news release. Langley Air Force Base was asked to provide a tanker truck to increase the water supply.
After the fire was deemed under control, an adult was found dead inside the home. Several dogs were found safe in their living areas outside the home, the news release said. The Hampton Animal Response Team was dispatched to care for and ensure their safety.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
The person who died was not identified.
